I needed feedback. Badly. I'd started my first paranormal romance and was unsure of my elements and storyline. Were my paranormal elements strong enough? Was my storyline a silly premise? Through one of my RWA loops, I received notice of the Golden Acorn Award of Excellence contest put on by The Charter Oak Chapter of RWA, serving members living in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. Granted it's considered a rather prestigious contest, but it's also well-known for its great judges' feedback. So I entered. Imagine my shock when I finaled.
A friend of mine finaled, too. And, frankly, I hope she wins. First of all, I don't think my heart could take the win...LOL...and second, the winner has a chance at agent representation with a literary agency. Most of you know I already have an agent--an agent I adore. So if I were to win, the prize would be wasted. Kind of like Angelina Jolie winning a free lip augmentation proceedure from a plastic surgeon. She's so stunning, she doesn't need it. And I don't need the attentions of another agent.
If you've ever read anything by AJ Nuest, you know she can wring the emotions right out of you. Lawd, how I cried through Jezebel's Wish. The woman knows how to play a strong jazzbeat on your heart strings, don't think she doesn't. She can also write humor AND paranormal. I tell stories; she makes you feel them. I do hope she wins and gets the nod from that literary agency.
Don't get me wrong now. I'd like to move up a notch or two in the rankings. Afterall, no one likes to be the last as$ in the class...oops...was that a cliche?
So, to my friend, AJ Nuest, you go girl! Make me proud.

Congrats, Vonnie! You are a star. :) And congrats to your friend. Good luck in the final round.
Congratulations, Vonnie! When its feasible, I'd love to hear the feedback these judges gave you--what an honor. If you win maybe they can work out something else for you.
Thanks, Dawn Marie. Keep your fingers crossed for AJ. Thanks for stopping by.
Will do, Charmaine. I recieved feedback from 3 judges, and each was a little different. I've already used much of it to tweak and slap my first 20 pages into submission. Can you imagine? One said I was "wordy." LOL...ME!!!
We had to submit our first 20 pages for judging. I'd only written 62, so am early in the process. To move onto stage 2 of the judging, I had to then submit a 1500 word synopsis...on a book I'd yet to finish. At first I freaked, then I settled down to the task of some creative writing: writing about a book I hadn't written yet. LOL
How generous you are and yet I completely understand how you are torn. I say best of luck to you both.
Thanks, Maddy, although it's not a matter of being generous. It's a matter of wanting another author to have what I have--an agent. In my dreams AJ wins and I come in as first-runner-up. Yeee-haw!!!
Good luck to you both and I hope you each get your heart's desire from this experience!
Un-be-lievable. Unbelieveable! Vonnie! You have totally made me cry! Oh my dear friend. Thank you so very much for this. You are an amazing woman that I am truly blessed to call my friend. I don't even know what to say! LOL Thank you so much. I luv ya ta bits!
Thanks, Calisa. After all you've been through with the fright of fires in your neighborhood, I'm thrilled you've taken the time to stop by. Stay safe!
AJ, don't cry! Here, have a piece of chocolate...or...a glass of wine. I've got red and white. Which do you prefer? Save those tears for when you win, girlfirend!
Congratulations on finaling! Good luck in the final round!
Awww...I'll be thrilled either way with who wins - but since you've already got an agent - GO AJ!!! You two are both very amazing and talented writers!! I can't wait to hear how you guys go :)
Thanks Alexa. Your good wishes mean a lot.
LaVerne, I'm with you. Go AJ!!!!
Congratulations on your accomplishment!
