NYC Got the Best of Me!

Everyone who writes romance knows the big RWA convention was in NYC a couple weeks ago. Since I'd never been to the Big Apple, we decided to go a few days early and stay on for a couple days afterward. We reserved rooms in the Marriot Marquee where the convention was held, in case one of us got sick we could reach the other quickly.

I bought the train tickets so we could take the Amtrak up and back, and our plans were complete. We had a straight shot from Lynchburg to NYC--an eight-hour ride. All my writing projects were done for the moment, and I wasn't due for another retina injection until the day after we got home. So, it was a time for me to relax.

Then I crawled into a taxi.

Now, a couple things need explained. Taxi drivers don't need to know how to count since they're driving five and six abreast in a four-lane street. Speaking English is not encouraged. All the cab has to have is a loud horn and strong brakes. All you, the passenger, need are blindfolds, a bottle of strong nervy-dervies, and a wad of twenties since everywhere we went seemed to cost us $20, plus tip. When we left a meet-and-greet at Penguin Random House, I was in a dress and heels, feet swollen from the heat. The taxi we hailed was an SUV. I was having trouble getting in, the driver got out, cupped my ass and all but tossed me into the back seat, and then had nerve enough to charge us an extra $1.50 for "extra handling."

But I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm still steamed over that man copping a feel.

The hotel's registration desk was on the eighth floor since a theatre and another business occupied the lower floors. After you registered, you went to a bank of elevators, pushed a button for the floor your room was on and an alphabetical letter from A to N appeared for the elevator you were to rush to take. Sometimes you had to dash to the elevator since the doors were already open and at others you had to stand and wait. Thank goodness the rooms were decent once you reached them, although still not worth the price. I suppose the old adage: location, location, location is true.

On our pre-conference days, we saw the Statue of Liberty and the new tower, in the center of the photo, and the memorial reflection pool. Ate ice cream and stepped into tourist shops to escape some of the heat since a heat advisory was on.

Random House had us to their building twice for meetings and meals. The first was the meet-and-greet. I was tickled to see my cover for "Bearing It All" on the poster in the reception area. Top row, second from the left.

All walls of the lobby of Penguin Random House and the hallways leading to it are lined with shelves of books--old, new, and famous.

We were taken through the offices of the Loveswept team, introduced to each employee, and told what they did for us and our books. Then we went into the conference room for wine and cheese and lots of talking and planning. All this was followed by champagne and strawberries as we got to know eachother even more.

Meanwhile, my homemade Effie baffies were waiting back at our hotel room...Baffies are Scottish for bedroom slippers.

Loveswept is an ebook line, but for RWA they printed thirty copies of our books for us to sign and give away. How would I, practically a nobody, stand out among the BIG names? I'd channel Effie. After all, I have to be the only romance author to write a romantic series where the pink-haired grandmother gets more fan mail, more mention in reviews, and more attention than the heroine and hero. Even though the hero is clad in a kilt.

As I schlepped in my baffies by the line of women, waiting outside the ballroom, I heard squeals of "Effie! OMG, it's Effie!" I wasn't prepared for the women who dashed toward me, arms outstretched.

Women, who had never read my Highlander's Beloved Series, came over to see what kind of books a woman crazy enough to dress like I was would write. My books were soon gone.

I attended some workshops, but not all I'd planned. I was just too tired. I got to meet Mackenzie Crowne, Kelly Moran, and Lisa Olech and we talked late into the night. What fun! Calvin enjoyed his time with the ladies, too.

On our second trip back to Penguin Random House, we sat and chatted with other writers as we ate. Each department head spoke of future plans to keep their authors happy. Some authors also came onstage to talk about how they meet their schedules and increased their sales. My editor, marketing person, and digital designer cornered me and talked about the future and their ideas for my series. How to grow my exposure, etc. I was so nervous, I couldn't speak. I just kept sipping the champagne and nodding. Lord knows what all I said "yes" to.
By the time our train was due to leave for points South, we were both ready to see home. A few days later, I was in the doctor's office. Two days after that, I was back. Tests were run. All came back negative. I'd evidently picked up a bug while in NYC or perhaps drank too much of the water. I'm doing better now. I get another retina injection this week. I have bleeding behind my left retina and they insert a needle to withdrawal the blood. But that's nothing compared to crawling in and out of those yellow taxis. Unless my publisher insists I come, I don't think I'll need to see the Big Apple ever again.

I've Been Overwhelmed By Good This Week

It's nearing midnight on Friday and I've had a week many writers dream about. A week that makes one feel both humbled and elated at the same time. A week of joy. Yet a week of tearful clouds as wet as the summer rains we've been receiving nearly every afternoon. I've been blessed and I've been overwhelmed. Believe me when I say I'm emotionally exhausted.

I'm not complaining.

I'm just trying to come to grips with it all.

On Monday, an article I'd written about how my hero--a bear shifter--appeared to me was in USA Today.

On Tuesday, my first paranormal romance was published by Random House Loveswept. I had a book release party from 11 am to 11 pm on Facebook. Authors who participated were NYT's and USA'a Best Selling authors Laura Kaye and Terry Spear, as well as fantastic authors: Kelly Moran, JM Stewart, Amie Louellan, AJ Nuest, Lisa Olech, Sarah Grimm, Mackenzie Crowne and Maeve Grayson.  Oh, and hunks in kilts...

We talked about books, men, oogled guys in and out of kilts and laughed. It was a total blast.

There were dozens of prizes awarded to those who attended and commented. Calvin made me food and drinks and carried them to me so I wouldn't have to leave my computer except for pottie breaks. Then, just as I was ready to collapse into bed, Laura Kaye posted on Facebook that A HIGHLANDER'S OBSESSION was trending at Number One on Barnes and Noble.

What?

I didn't even know books trended, that's how clueless I was!

Thank goodness she provided the link, for I wouldn't have known where to look for it. But there it was...#1

Suddenly sleep was the last thing on our minds. Calvin and I stared at the Trending List of the top 100 e-books flying off the shelves at B and N for hours until our eyeballs went into revolt. My book trended at number one for roughly 28 hours before it began to slip. Even so, my numbers at both places--Amazon and Barnes and Noble have remained high for me. Not for the big sellers, now, but for me. And for that, I'm thrilled.

Reviews started coming in and not a one said "It's obvious this idiot has never written a paranormal before in her life"--and, believe me, I was sure someone would. One guy did lambast my Scottish burr even though my friend, who grew up in Scotland, and the Scottish language expert at Random House had corrected all the many times I was wrong. One reviewer claimed I had too many paranormal elements in one book. But, hey, we can't please everyone. We write the best story we can...and usually it's the story the characters give to us. We don't make them up! We take dictation.

Today my editor emailed me that The Library Journal had reviewed my book and written a very favorable one. It was something I never expected.

This whole week has been a basket of goodness. One I hope you all get to experience sometime. Everyone deserves a week like I've had.

Cover Reveals, Announcements & OMG Moments!

Being retired means we've settled into a calm routine, spiced with  trips to the doctor and afternoon matinees, feasting on mass quantities of popcorn. Younger, more active adults would say we live boring lives. Silly fools. We all know excitement comes in many forms and sizes.

For example, I recently received the release date for A MAN FOR ANNALEE--November 20th. How exciting is that? This is a SWEET historical, full of humor and history, but no sex. I tried to get my heroine to cooperate, but she said she wasn't having any of it.

BLURB:  When men fight over the feisty new arrival in town, the battle forher hand begins...
Annalee Gallagher loses her parents, home, and business in the Great Fire of Chicago. When she travels to Cicero Creek in the Wyoming Territory to start a new life, more heartache awaits her, and so do the attentions of several men--for good and for evil. Why was her stagecoach attacked, and was the shot that zinged over her head one night a wild bullet or a bad aim?

Boone Hartwell, the marshal of Cicero Creek, suspects someone is out to kill the new spitfire in town. She amuses him and touches a lonely part of his soul, but keeping her safe is a fulltime occupation. More importantly, can a white man raised as Cheyenne rise above her other suitors to win her heart? One thing is for certain in his determined mind: He's the man for Annalee.

If the story sounds vaguely familiar, it was once published by Still Moments Publishing that is now part of The Wild Rose Press. This story and the next have been slightly revamped and given new covers.

A TASTE OF CHOCOLATE is another SWEET short story (notice word short). It's release date is December 4th. The Blurb for it is...

Hope Morningstar has the worst luck with men. One boyfriend wrote her a "Dear John" letter while serving overseas. Her latest romantic interest broke up with her in a text. When a traffic detour puts her in an unfamiliar neighborhood, she stops at Freya's Coffee Shop, where she gets more than directions. She gets another chance at finding love.

Declan Fleming, scarred by a cheating ex-wife, has given up searching for love. He's engaged the services of Freya, the matchmaker. Still, he's been waiting for a year and has just about given up. Then Freya sends him Hope.

When trust issues come into play, can the magical influence of this matchmaker create a happy ending? After all, finding that one special love often involves a bit of magic.

AN ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

I've been offered a contract from Random House on my first paranormal. Originally titled WHEN PAISLEY MEETS PLAID, it may be changed to A HIGHLANDER'S BELOVED to get in line with other titles in the series I'll be writing. This contemporary paranormal with bear-shifters, an animal communicator and matchmaking ghosts will be published under Random House's digital line -- Loveswept. Release date is August 18, 2014.

And that's my OMG moment of the week, of the month, of the year. When my agent called to tell me Random House offered, I couldn't speak. I knew they were interested, but still didn't expect an offer. The editor at RH read my Christmas story and loved it. Unfortunately they'd already contracted their holiday titles for this year. She emailed my agent, telling her she loved my writing and asked if I had anything else. Dawn replied she knew I was working on a paranormal that took third place in the Golden Acorn. The editor immediately replied with "send me the first three chapters and a synopsis." When Dawn told me, I laughed. I mean I only had a third of it written. Dawn told me to write fast. OMG!!! So my fat, arthritic fingers went to work as I kept thinking, the editor won't like it. It's not dark enough. There's too much humor.

Two weeks later, Dawn got an email asking for a "full." I was about two-thirds finished by then. Work mind...work...type fingers...type!!! We sent the full to her last Monday. On Friday, the editor emailed Dawn, saying she "adored it" as long as I added more sex. LOL She sent it to committee on Friday afternoon. Monday they offered. It's been a whirlwind week.

So, is being retired boring? Not at the Davis household!
