#SPeekSunday
It's Sunday again, folks, and that means sharing six paragraphs from either a published project or a WIP. This is from A HIGHLANDER'S OBSESSION, a Highlander's Beloved Novel releasing August 18th from Loveswept/Random House.
I had a bit of a sneak peek, myself, this week. My editor showed me 2 possible covers for the book. **SQUEE!!** I'm not allowed to share yet since they like to do their own cover reveals. But as soon as I can, you'll see it everywhere.
As a set-up for this scene, Paisley and her grandma have traveled to Scotland to attend the funeral of a relative. Paisley is what we call a telepathic animal communicator. Ronan and Bryce have picked up the ladies at the airport and are driving them to Matheson Lodge on a dark and rainy night.
Ronan
stepped on the brake and the Land Rover hydroplaned for a short distance. He
fought to keep control. “Bloody hell, I can barely see beyond the end of the
hood. The weatherman didna predict this storm. All this rain and wind has me
seeing things. Is that an owl flying just in front of our vehicle? It canna be.”
Bryce
leaned forward. “Aye, ’tis an owl and a white one, to boot. What the bloody
hell the cailleach-oidhche is doing
here is beyond me. Slow down so we dinna hit him.”
The
owl slowed also. I will lead ye safely to
the lodge, American. Ye are the answer.
Paisley
stiffened and used her gift to communicate to the owl. The answer to what?
This ye will learn. Never fear.
Unease
prickled her skin much as the rain pelted the car. How would an owl know she
was from America? She hung her head and rubbed her forehead to ease her
headache. For that matter, how did the owl know she could communicate with him?
She straightened and her breath clogged in her lungs. Glowing eyes blinked at
her from the forest. Three pair from the dark, twisted shadows of the trees.

Nice spooky ending to this bit. I, too, wonder how the owl knew so much. Maybe because he's a wise bird? Makes me want to know more.
Thanks for stopping by, Jean. Have a great week.
Oh- I got chills reading that. I wouldn't want to see glowing eyes peering back at me. Yikes!
Oh can't wait for this one! Oh who doesn't love an accent!
Oh, Gemma, I had those same glowing eyes staring at me from inside my head for nearly a month. I'd just had surgery to remove a cancerous cyst in my saliva gland and I was sure the cancer had spread to my brain. At the time, they were just glowing spots. Then they blinked and I knew they were eyes...but the eyes of what? We writers have strange minds, they work differently than those of non-writers. Poor things, thing how boring their thoughts must be.
Getting the Scottish accent right was a chore, Michelle. Thankfully, Random House has a Scottish expert on staff who pointed out some errors in my Scottish verbiage and gave me some great online links for reference for future books.
Oh my gosh! I do love me a Scotsman. I can`t wait to read this book!
Creighton, the hero of this bear-shifting clan, is quite the passionate Scott. I'll be anxious for you to meet him.
So many questions and no answers.
I love everything about Scotland. Your excerpt also reminds me of a big white bird hitting our car one night at midnight. So scary. Why is a bird out at that hour?
Vonnie, this is so good. Can't wait to see the cover.
Getting a foreign accent right is always hard as we tend to fall back on our "modern language" all too often, but lady, you pulled it off wonderfully! Thanks so much for sharing.
The excerpt gave me chills, Vonnie. Loved it. Can't wait to read this one. Oh, and I love the white owl. :)
Sounds just like my kind of read! Loved the snippet!
