Two Months Until Book Three Releases!

Bearing It All, book three of my Highlander's Beloved Series, releases two months from today. I've tried very hard to make each book different, yet keep the Matheson family and Effie alike. You can read each as a stand alone or in order as a set. Will there be more? My editor says she'd like to see books four and five, depending on the sales of book three. Although, the editorial team isn't sure how they want me to write those future books--more romantic, more paranormal, or more historical.

The whole series has been a hoot for me. I used to say, "I write all sub-genres of romance except paranormal. I don't have the mind for that."

SO WHY BEARS?

Creativity attacks us all differently. Musicians scribble lyrics on napkins or envelopes. Artists often draw on any flat surface. Writers, who write by the seat of their pants, rely on inspiration. Mine comes to me in the form of handsome males, typically at night just as I’m drifting off to sleep. They tell me about themselves, their loves, and ask me to write their stories.

Roughly three years ago, I had surgery to remove a cancerous cyst from my saliva gland, a rather involved four-hour surgery that’s left part of my left cheek and ear numb. About a month post-surgery, two golden spots appeared at the back of my mind. These round spots glowed, and I freaked—OMG brain cancer. The surgeon didn’t get it all and it’s spread to my brain. So I googled brain cancer like a mad woman, reading all I could on symptoms and nowhere did it state patients complained of seeing glowing spots in the backs of their minds.

I hated to call my cancer doctor, knowing he’d put me through a battery of tests only to prove what I already knew. I had brain cancer. I picked up the phone to call and the golden orbs blinked. Blinked, mind you! Eyes? These are eyes? And they blinked again.  Well shoot, I didn’t need a cancer doctor. I needed a shrink! I’ve got freakin’ eyes in the back of my head, glowing and blinking  and watching.

So, for a month, they waited and willed me to speak to them. Well, my darlings, I might be half-crazed, but I know enough not to speak to something that shouldn’t be there in the first place.

Then one night, when I was almost asleep, these eyes left my head and floated to the foot of our bed into a large bear. Now, I often think characters search for the right author to tell their stories. So I said, “I’m sorry, but I don’t write children’s books.” He shook his head. “Oh, you’re not that kind of bear?” He shook his head again and shifted into this dark-haired, muscled, kilt-wearing Scot. He sauntered toward my side of the bed and I reached for my glasses. I mean, wouldn’t you? Would you want to miss one gorgeous inch of this guy?

Again, I apologized. “Hon, you’re still in the wrong writer’s house. I don’t write paranormal.”

He sat on the edge of the bed and I scooted over to make sure his fine kilted behind had plenty of room. “Aye, lassie, but ye will. Me name is Creighton Matheson. In Scottish, mathe means bear and I am laird of sons of bears. Have ye ever heard how bears came to be extinct in Scotland?” I shook my head. I mean, how could I talk with a mouthful of drool? He told me this fantastical story of how the Vikings killed off the male bears and imprisoned the sow and baby bears in a cave along the coastline.

The next morning I googled “Are bears extinct in Scotland?” Chills slithered up my spine. They were. Sources claimed the extinction was due to over-hunting and the government was trying to reintroduce them into the Highlands. But I had a better story; one from a bear-shifter, himself.

Now bears can be determined creatures and mine would have no rest until I started his book. So I set aside my work in progress for a month and wrote a few chapters to quiet the bear. By then I was in love with my bear-shifter, this sexy man with a duality that both wounded my soul and charmed me. I needed…needed…for him to have his HEA.

I was also plagued with a huge problem: I didn’t know the paranormal romance genre. I felt like a fake for even trying to write one. So, I read Terry Spear and her wolf-shifters and Eve Langlais and her Furry United Coalition.

Still, the question remains: Why bears? From my research, bears are a healing totem, one that requires you to rest (hibernation) and to find your strength. Mine certainly helped me through my six months of recovery and to strengthen my writing.

I used it as my play story. Whenever I hit a wall in whatever book I was writing, I’d hop over to my bear story for a week and play. There’s a relaxation in writing something you know no one else will ever read. It gives your mind a chance to work through the corner you'd written yourself into in your WIP. My agent, at the time, knew about it, because I’d told her I was taking a break from this book or that to work through a problem by playing with my bears.

An editor at Random House Loveswept read something I’d written and called my agent to ask if I had anything not yet contracted. Dawn replied I didn’t, but I did have this bear-shifter story I worked on from time to time. “Send me the first three chapters,” the editor commanded.

I was not happy. I told my agent I wasn’t writing this for anyone to read. It was a relaxation tool for me. We argued. I sent in the chapters (I’m such a wuss). Two days later, the editor asked how soon I could have the book done and three were contracted. Maybe I should play more often.

Sometimes We Need to Pull Back Projects by Vonnie Davis

I was an excited, wet-behind-the-ears old broad when I signed my first publishing contract with The Wild Rose Press on November 16, 2011. The contract was for Storm's Interlude, the third book I'd managed to finish. The first two? I'd long since deleted them from my computer. It seems agents, nor editors like stories written in twelve points of view...or with a heroine so bitchy even the dog hated her. Oh, the lessons I've learned along the way, I could write a book about how to write a book.

But The Wild Rose Press was good to me. There's no other way to put it. They took a no-name writer and published her book, one that won several awards, by the way. At their writers' retreat in Asheville in 2012, Rhonda Penders, one of the owners of the press, gave me some wise advice. "Write two 'shorts' for every 'long'." I didn't think much of it at the time. I was all about writing books, not novellas. But I am smart enough to try the opinion of someone who knows more about an industry than I do. So, when Stacy, an editor, laid out her Honky Tonk Hearts series, I wondered if I could write short. I took an online class on "Writing the Sensual Novella."

Still I wondered. Then, one night Win rode into our bedroom on his Harley, took off his helmet and asked me to tell his story. He was a veteran from the War in Iraq, with PTSD, an amputated leg below his knee and some hearing loss. Would romance readers enjoy reading about such a man? Those Violet Eyes, my best seller at TWRP, was born.

I began writing more novellas, enjoying the process and seeing their worth.

Even so, I kept writing novels, especially about my favorite city--Paris. I set a series there. A series that, for some reason, never caught on. And, loving Paris the way I do, it hurt. I promoted them the best way I knew how, yet the sales just didn't happen and thus the reviews. Ten for one and eleven for the other. So the books sank into a quagmire of nothingness.

My agent and I talked. We decided to ask for the rights back for them. Maybe in my spare time, after my paranormal Scottish series for LoveSwept at Random House and my firemen's wild heat series for HarperImpulse are all published, I can rework those three books. Make them shine a little more.

While my novellas remain at Wild Rose Press, my books are in my hands now, no longer for sale. When I hit a rough patch in my current WIP, I'll zip over and read one of those books, correct the errors and breathe some life into it. Or maybe I'll realize they, too, need deleted. It's all a learning process, isn't it?

Sneak Peek Sinday #ScottishParanormalRomance #SPeekSunday

Has a week gone by already? It seems just a couple of days ago that many writers gave you a sneak peek into a published work or something they were working on. Each Sunday, we share SIX paragraphs to whet your appetite to read more of our writing.

Part of my loss of time this week was my excitement over LoveSwept/Random House's cover reveal for book one of my Highlander's Beloved Trilogy. A HIGHLANDER'S OBSESSION is available for pre-order most anywhere you can order books online.

Available for Pre-Order

SET UP: Paisley can telecommunicate with animals. So when she and her gram travel to the highlands, land of bear-shifters, she hears a man's thoughts and thinks she's lost her mind. Only the man's thoughts she's heard is, unbeknown to her, part bear. In this scene, she's telling her grandmother...

Gram raised her cup and held it in front of her lips. “You heard his thoughts or heard bells ring?”

“Very funny. I heard his thoughts. Scared me so bad I fainted.” She swiped at falling tears. Childhood fears and insecurities resurfaced. Feeling helpless didn’t sit well with her. She was, by nature, a fighter. “You don’t think I’m crazy, do you? You won’t send me away?” Listen to me. I sound like a scared child.

Flannel-clad arms enveloped her and drew her close. The scent of the baby powder Gram was so fond of comforted her. “My precious child, no one separates us. No one.” Gram pressed a kiss to her damp hair. “When you think about it, it’s not that much of a stretch. You can hear animals’ thoughts. Some people would say we humans are animals too. I think this is just a natural progression of your gift.”

“Gift? Oh, Gram, it’s more curse than gift.”

“Nonsense. Look at all the animals you’ve been able to help. Veterinarians around the country contact you when they have a difficult patient. Your talent, your gift, is in demand.

"Still…” Her grandmother’s eyes held that ornery sparkle. “I think it’s telling the first person’s thoughts you heard were that of a handsome-as-hell man in a kilt.” She pursed her lips. “By his thunderstruck expression, I’d say he was just as taken with you as you were with him.”

COVER REVEAL for A HIGHLANDER'S OBSESSION

I wasn't supposed to share My book cover until Random House did their big cover real thingy. But the PR person was on vacation last week, so things moved ahead without my knowledge. This morning I found my cover on Goodreads when I went to review another LoveSwept book and, later, someone told me they saw it on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Well, shoot...here I am at the train station while my ship comes in. Sigh...

So, here it is...

Two wandering souls discover that true love needs no words in this explosive, fantastical novel from Vonnie Davis.

Paisley Munro considered her ability to mentally communicate with animals both a gift and a curse. Although she's found meaning in her so-called gifts by working as a veterinary assistant, she prefers to keep her talent a secret. But while traveling to Scotland for a relative’s funeral, Paisley fears that she really has lost her mind. Out in the highlands, she hears distinctly human thoughts coming from a wild bear. Terrified and desperate, she returns to the lodge and collapses in the powerful arms of its owner, a mysterious man with whom she shares a simmering attraction.

Creighton Matheson and his fellow shape-shifters have been roaming this land freely for centuries. Now Paisley may inherit his home, putting his kind in grave danger. His mistrust only deepens when he realizes she can read his mind. Yet he cannot deny that this tantalizing woman makes him burn with desire—and hunger for the prospect of a tender love. Now Creighton must decide which would hurt more: revealing the truth or losing Paisley forever.

Sneak Peek Sunday

#SPeekSunday

It's Sunday again, folks, and that means sharing six paragraphs from either a published project or a WIP. This is from A HIGHLANDER'S OBSESSION, a Highlander's Beloved Novel releasing August 18th from Loveswept/Random House.

I had a bit of a sneak peek, myself, this week. My editor showed me 2 possible covers for the book. **SQUEE!!** I'm not allowed to share yet since they like to do their own cover reveals. But as soon as I can, you'll see it everywhere.

As a set-up for this scene, Paisley and her grandma have traveled to Scotland to attend the funeral of a relative. Paisley is what we call a telepathic animal communicator. Ronan and Bryce have picked up the ladies at the airport and are driving them to Matheson Lodge on a dark and rainy night.

Ronan stepped on the brake and the Land Rover hydroplaned for a short distance. He fought to keep control. “Bloody hell, I can barely see beyond the end of the hood. The weatherman didna predict this storm. All this rain and wind has me seeing things. Is that an owl flying just in front of our vehicle? It canna be.”

Bryce leaned forward. “Aye, ’tis an owl and a white one, to boot. What the bloody hell the cailleach-oidhche is doing here is beyond me. Slow down so we dinna hit him.”

The owl slowed also. I will lead ye safely to the lodge, American. Ye are the answer.

Paisley stiffened and used her gift to communicate to the owl. The answer to what?

This ye will learn. Never fear.

Unease prickled her skin much as the rain pelted the car. How would an owl know she was from America? She hung her head and rubbed her forehead to ease her headache. For that matter, how did the owl know she could communicate with him? She straightened and her breath clogged in her lungs. Glowing eyes blinked at her from the forest. Three pair from the dark, twisted shadows of the trees.

In 2014, Five is my Magic Number of Flowers

My debut novel, Storm's Interlude, came out nearly three years ago. For the next couple of years, I had to turn in a completed manuscript in hopes of getting another contract. One book or novella at a time, although I often submitted another before the previous one released. What can I say? I love to write and I'm retired. The kids are grown, living in other states. It's just Calvin and me. Writing keeps me from that mindless activity of watching TV.

Then I started getting contracts from the Big Five. They operate a little differently. Once they see your writing and know you can meet deadlines, you can contract from proposals. I typically write four paragraphs about each book, something similar to a back cover blurb, just more detailed. My agent sends them to an editor along with my publishing and promotion history.

As a consequence, for the next two years, I'll be writing exclusively for both HarperImpulse and Loveswept/Random House. Contract stipulations prevent me from submitting elsewhere until all contracted books have been released--all eight of them.

Of course, I have to write the books first...and that's the thing. I'd be a fool to even hint that I'm not a bit overwhelmed or worried or scared plotless. I mean, think about it...

For 2014, five is my magic number.

Or maybe my downfall...

I have five books contracted to turn into my editors on scheduled dates. All of them must be 80,000 words, except for the Highlander book, which must tip the scales at 85,000 words. My fingertips are typing out words--at times, woefully inadequate words. My mind is focused more on my literary dream world than it is on reality. And my self-control is working hard at keeping my eyes from straying to the dates on the calendar like magnets of nerves. You see, I have five romantic flowers to produce this year.

April 24th -- Book one of Firemen's Wild Heat series, To Catch a Flame.
July 8th -- Book one of my series set near New Orleans, KnightShades: Maximo
August 11th -- Book two of Highlander's Beloved series, A Highlander's Passion
October 4th -- Book two of Firemen's Wild Heat, Firestorm
December 20th -- Book two set near New Orleans, Knightshades: Sloan

The following year should be easier. Only 3 contracted books are due in 2015. So, if you don't hear much from me, don't think I don't care. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Stay well...stay healthy...stay in touch. Your words might be what keeps me in the reality of writerly sanity.

More Bears, More Men, More Wild Stories!

** ANNOUNCEMENT! **

Loveswept/Random House has just contracted book two and three of my bear-shifter series. So far, their tentative titles are A HIGHLANDER'S PASSION and A HIGHLANDER'S SANCTUARY but, as with book one, the team at Loveswept might decide to change them.

Book one is now A HIGHLANDER'S OBSESSION, a Highlander's Beloved novel and it's up for pre-order even though it doesn't release until August 18th.

The handsome fellow to your right is my Street Team's mascot. We're running a bit of a contest among the members of Vonnie's Vixens to name him. So far, Magnus has the most votes.  If you have active facebook and twitter accounts and would like to become one of Vonnie's Vixens, please say so in the comments and leave your email address so I can contact you. For more information, go to http://vonniedavisstreetteam.blogspot.com/

Of course my Street Team is about more than my paranormal romances, we're also about my Firemen's Wild Heat series, releasing this year from HarperImpulse. We love talking romance, men and the crazy life of writing. They tease me and, bless their hearts, tweet and also post to Facebook anything I ask. I've got an awesome team.

Is it August yet? A HIGHLANDER'S BELOVED releases August 18th

The date's been announced for the LoveSwept/Random House release of A HIGHLANDER'S BELOVED: August 18th.

There's no cover art yet...sigh...I'm getting anxious.

I do have the blurb and thanks to some gracious souls, who consented to read and write a few sentences, the "advance praise" requested by my editor are now listed on Random House's website. Her edits arrived last Friday and I sent them back on Monday, so things are moving along nicely.

Now my editor wants the first 3 chapters and a synopsis of the next book in the series. The working title for it is A HIGHLANDER'S PASSION. So I am writing and deleting and writing, working to capture their chemistry. These two are not strangers. They've known each other all their lives and, for a brief time a couple years ago, loved each other but something happened--doesn't it always?--and now my heroine wants nothing to do with my hero. She's got enough to contend with: the loss of her unborn child, widowhood, a new job working for the baffy pink-haired American (my alter-ego) and honing her newly-discovered witch's temperament. Oh...did I fail to mention she's a witch? Now, do you see what I'm dealing with here? And just wait until the hero finds out she's got powers. She might just knock him on his bear-shifting behind. Ohhh, I see possibilities. Don't you?

In the meantime, here's the blurb and advance praise for A HIGHLANDER'S BELOVED.

Come to Scotland with me for a Sneak Peak...

I'm waiting for edits to arrive from my editor at LoveSwept/Random House for A Highlander's Beloved, book one of Highland Shifters of Mathe Bay. No cover yet for this book releasing the end of August, but the editor did send me the blurb someone from her team had written...

Here's an excerpt...a sneak peak at my first paranormal romance, A Highlander's Beloved.  The opening scene, in fact...

Paisley Munro tried to not gawk at the two broad-shouldered men in kilts as she hefted her suitcase off the luggage carousel in the Inverness Airport, located northeast of the city referred to as the capitol of the Scottish Highlands. Her grandmother, on the other hand, was all eyes.

“Before we leave this country, I’m finding out what they wear under those kilts, even if I have to hike one up and take a gander myself.” Her grandmother patted her curls. She’d dyed her hair dark red for the trip. Unfortunately, the inability of her white hair to absorb the dye’s full effect resulted in a halo of pink curls. The combination of her tresses and her pink pantsuit made her look like the Pink Panther with wrinkles, just as skinny and wiry but without the tail.

“Behave yourself, Gram.” Paisley tugged her grandmother’s luggage off the slowly moving belt that squeaked with every couple inches gained. No use telling the free spirit to act her age. At seventy-four, why should she start now? “Our ride ought to be here somewhere.”

Paisley glanced around for Fiona Matheson, who should be holding a sign for Matheson Lodge. Fiona had promised in her reservation confirmation e-mail she’d meet them.

Gram elbowed her. “Good grief, they’re coming toward us. Look at those broad shoulders and hairy legs. I’m not drooling, am I?” She pulled her shoulders back and thrust out her chest. She lowered her chin to talk to her breasts. “Look perky, girls. Sexy hunks at two o’clock.”

“Would you please behave?” Paisley wrapped her hand around her gram’s boney elbow, prepared to lead her around the wall of Scottish brawn sauntering toward them. Who knew what kind of men they were.

“Guid eenin. Whit’s yer name?”

“Excuse me?” She’d hoped the language wouldn’t be a problem. Now she wasn’t so sure.

The honey-haired man cleared his throat. “Pardon, I forgot me English.” He bowed slightly.

Her grandmother all but purred.

“Good evening, ladies. Would ye be the Americans then? The Munros?” His thick burr created a lyrical sway to the English language.

The shorter of the two men, sporting a close-cropped red beard and mustache, had his hand over his mouth, pinching his lips together as if to keep them from spreading into a smile. Too bad the mirth twinkling in his brown eyes gave him away, that and his eyebrows rising to kiss his auburn hairline. His gaze alternately slid from Gram’s pink hair to the pink pelican bedroom slippers she insisted on wearing whenever she flew. “Conversation starters,” she called them. Finally, the battle lost, he turned his back to them, and his shoulders shook with silent laughter.

Paisley pushed her glasses up her nose and scowled at him, trying to decide if she should ignore his rudeness or call him on it. Figuring he wasn’t worth upsetting Gram, she turned to the other man. “Yes. Who might you be?”

He extended a large hand. “I’m Ronan Matheson and this is me youngest brother, Bryce. We’ve come to take ye to Matheson Lodge.”

“I was expecting someone else.” Should she trust these strangers?

“Aye, lass. Me mum, Fiona. Bryce’s daughter has a wee bit o’ colic, so Mum stayed home to care for her.”

She relaxed and exhaled the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. Tension eased and her shoulders dropped. Traveling was a strain under the best of circumstances. Bringing Gram here to the northern edge of Scotland so she could attend the funeral of her uncle doubled the stress. She worried the trip would be too tiring for her. “I’m Paisley Munro and this is my grandmother, Effie Iverson Munro.”

Ronan took Gram’s hand. “So this young lady is Angus Iverson’s niece, then? Why, yer too pretty to be a relation of old Angus, the goat.” He winced. “God forgive me for speaking ill of the dead.” He bowed and kissed Gram’s hand. “Ye have our deepest sympathy, Mrs. Munro.”

The man certainly knew how to schmooze the customers. Or was he a natural flirt?

Gram batted her eyelashes. “Aren’t you the cutest thing? Thank you. Your concern is quite touching. Although, I must admit, I haven’t seen Uncle Angus since I was a teenager and he came to America on a steamer for a visit.”

Ronan reached for the handle of Gram’s suitcase before bending his elbow toward her. “Well, lassies, we should head off. Creighton will be expecting us.”

“Creighton?” Paisley allowed Bryce to take her suitcase.

“He runs the lodge, miss.” Bryce’s lips were bright red from being pinched so hard. “He’s our eldest brother. We’ve a family run business. Our mother handles reservations and oversees the hired help. Ronan sees to the interior workings of the lodge. Plumbing, electrical and carpentry. I see to the upkeep of the grounds and the vehicles.”

“And Creighton?”

“Hell, Creighton sees to everybody.”
